This episode is part two of my interview with Wisconsin, Outpost 39. Jody and Pat share more of their story and give insights to their success.
Stay out of their gravy
Jody attributes much of their success to the philosophy of a committed team that utilizes their specific God given gifts. Jody appreciates the right buss, right seat, analogy portrayed in the book Good To Great. When everyone is on the right bus and in the right seat organizations perform at their best. Get to know your team and allow each member to shine using their talents.
Be Rather Selective
Many organizations, that rely heavily on volunteers, inadvertently lower expectations for fear the work will never get done. Remember who we serve, and rely on God to bring the right team together. Jody and his team are very selective in whom they choose. Forcing someone in the wrong seat will only frustrate them and the team. God has a specific job for that person and being honest with them will help them get closer to Gods perfect plan. An interview process can be the key to facilitating this goal. One of Jody’s teams basic litmus tests is to gauge a persons eagerness to spotlight themselves -vs- shine Gods love to the lost and broken hearted.
Don’t underestimate those in the wings
Many of your most faithful Commanders are willing and able to step up when needed. They don’t need to be in the spotlight but if God needs them to stick their head up over the crowd they will do it with excellence. Great Commanders will not just sit on the sidelines forever — use them or loose them.
Greatest Pain, Greatest Gain
Jody and Pat shared their frustration in the lack of training that their leadership obtains. Whether it’s a lack of availability or a lack of interest leadership remains vastly under trained. Something we all need to do better in promoting training is to highlight the why not the what. Go on YouTube one day and look up one of the Sergento cheese comercials. Thirty seconds in you wonder what they are even selling. Every scene is a family or a couple have great family time together in some of the most comforting settings. There is no way they would sell nearly as much cheese if they just simply put a block of cheder in front of you. Their selling the why.
The greatest gain that Jody and Pat shared is one we all share. It is such a please to be called by the King, and to tend to His affairs in His absence.
