PowWow Playbook
We wanted to give other Outposts a chance to go backstage and see what OP169 does to prepare for PowWow. Feel free to use any or all of the playbook in your own planning. OP169 pulls out the playbook three months prior to PowWow at one of their monthly commanders/leadership meetings. That gives them approxamitly twelve Wednesdays to plan and prepare, and with all of the moving parts at an Outpost twelve weeks is just enough time.
Camp Boss Is The Key
OP169 always starts with the selection of a Camp Boss. This will be the one point of contact that all things will flow through. The beauty of the playbook is that it takes the fear factor of the table. Many time it can be intimidating to take on a leadership role especially if you are a new leader. The PowWow playbook gives a leader a good snapshot of the resources at their disposal and the team that will be supporting them.
Assemble The Team
With the Camp Boss in place it is just a matter of assembling the team by filling in the blanks. Many hands make light work. This is also the moment when your Outpost will decide whether or not they will go for all blues. You might thing that you should always go for blues, but why set yourself up for failure. Each year the themes change and along with that is the enthusiasm for that theme. That will have a big impact on how your Outpost tackles each of the criteria in order to reach blue. OP169 does not always go for all blues. Now, that doesn’t me they don’t participate in something, it just means that they may scale down their participation based on the Outpost willingness to contribute time and resources.
Boy Lead, Adult Facilitated
Every area beyond the selecting of the team should be approached with the “Boy Lead, Adult Facilitated” model. There in nothing that will grow your Outpost or build camaraderie within the Outpost like adhering to this model.
The Only Two Rules For PowWow
Your Outpost will never be the same. We have spoken at length on this topic in an earlier blog and podcast. http://therangerpodcast.com/two-rules-youll-ever-need-s01e05/
