We all have a vision of families and royal rangers being highly engages, responsive, and devoted to their Outpost.  So, how does that happen.  Is it just the natural, organic result of following the weekly planner and giving out merits?  Well — to a degree.  But, just like any good relationship, it takes work, and a plan behind the scenes that keeps your leadership team in tune with the Outposts culture.

We do this with our families all the time.  At the center of every great business is reciprocity.

As with many of these moral/culture building tools this too is not some form of manipulation.  The key here is not to expect the mutual part up front.  Good reciprocity is not “scratch my back and I will scratch yours”.  It is authentic, no-strings-attached, appreciation.

Think of yourself like a farmer.  Your planting seeds.  It’s going to take patients.

Here are some steps:

Know your audience.

Use whatever tools are necessary to know your boys and their families.  (Hole In One Story, and James Anderson, Podcast only)

Be a good listener.  Being a good listener can start with a good question.  Something open-ended and then take notes.  Oh yeah, don’t forget to avoid the me too switch.

Know who isn’t there.

Don’t make what people don’t want.

How many times have you seen a business create a service or product that now one wants?  Every Outpost with have members with different needs and interests.  Find out what they are and tailor some of your events and merits around them.  That doesn’t mean you can’t introduce something new on the plate, but allow some trust to build before you take that action.

Make it easy for people to react, comment, and review.

Never shy away from a difficult situation.

Have great follow up and follow through.

Create some after action reports.
