Retention/Recruitment

Sarge, you told me that one of the most frequent questions that you are asked as you travel around the country is about recruitment.  How do you recruit men and women to be involved in the Royal Ranger ministry?  That’s correct! Not surprising, this is a frequent question here at The Ranger Podcast.  Whether you are a church of 200 or a church of 2000 Royal Ranger Outpost leadership can assemble a team that fits the scale of your family of believers.

There are three parts to this question that really need to be addressed.

  1. What’s holding your existing team together?  That’s a great lead question…  It’s important that we continually take inventory of where we are and where we are going.  If you’re not growing, you’re slowing.  In other words, what’s the glue that holds it all together?  First of all, the Senior Pastor is the key to the success of the RR Outpost.  This is not open for discussion or debate.  Beyond that it’s important to have good leadership at the top.  The Outpost Coordinator must have certain distinct leadership qualities and be motivated to lead others.  The relationship between the OC and the Senior Pastor as well as the relationship between the OC and his commanders will drive the train.  Leadership breeds leadership and success breeds success.
  2. What’s the score?  Men (and women)are drawn to a winning team.  Absolutely, without a doubt!  Everyone wants to be on a winning team.  Let me insert here that “Winners never quit and quitters never win!”  Jim Collins in his book, “Good to Great” talks about getting the right people on the bus in the right seat (including, especially the driver) and having that bus heading in the right direction.  We must develop cohesiveness within our “winning team.”  One source of developing a winning team is training.  I can’t overemphasize the importance of training.  As I look back over my time in Royal Rangers the thing that has helped me to be READY, is training.  Like anything else in life, there is an accumulation of knowledge and understanding.  Our mission is to train the trainer and in so doing we will develop our leaders and they will feel more comfortable in their assigned roles.
  3. Develop a great why around the what?  I may have gotten ahead of myself and answered this in the previous question.  I will say this though, people at all ages want to know why we are doing certain things and why we’re doing them the way that we do.  They, as well as you and I deserve a good solid answer.  Where are you going and how?  Another great question…  We absolutely must have an effective plan.  A roadmap, if you will.  We must plan, plan, plan and ten effectively execute that plan.  I’ve heard both of you talk about Plan A and Plan B, while listening to several of your podcasts.  I place a very high premium on planning and execution of the plan.  Side note:  We must make sure that we don’t forget the boy’s input while we are doing all this planning.  We should remember that this ministry is boy lead and adult facilitated at all times.

What’s holding your existing team together?  The glue?  You and I are the glue…  I mentioned earlier that there must be cohesiveness amongst your RR leaders.  We must allow the Holy Spirit to guide and direct us.  I can tell you from experience and many, many mistakes along the way that when I take my eyes off of the Lord (just like Peter when Jesus bid him to come) and I fail to listen to the “still small voice” I am programmed for failure.  Again, we must look to the Author and Finisher of our Faith, Jesus Christ (The Master Ranger) for His help, guidance and influence in our decision making.

“That which you nurture thrives”

If you nurture your Outpost fellowship and family you will develop something so attractive and alluring that recruitment will be a thing of the past.
